There was a time when Detroit could afford the occasional daydream, when Japan was better known for cheap replicas than fine motor cars, when market projections were more concerned with population growth than competition from abroad. Here are some pictures of those daydreams from the 1960s – the Flitewing from Dodge. As one who actually drove this incredible machine, I can attest to the dream’s reality. Gasoline was about a quarter a gallon, and so was the cost of a barrel of crude.
