Copywriting - can anyone do it?

With few exceptions, we can all do anything – draw a cat, drive a train, paint a house, race a car… Well, you can see where we’re going with this. Descartes begins his Discourse on Method by saying: “Good sense is of all things in the world the most equally distributed, for everybody thinks himself so abundantly provided with it, that even those most difficult to please in all other matters do not commonly desire more of it than they already possess.” There is a similar attitude when it comes to copywriting. Descartes does not belittle our satisfaction with our share of good sense, but he does go on to make a few points about how we apply it. And therein lies the tale. Yes, anyone can write copy. But writing copy, like any other occupation, is better performed by people who are trained to do it and, in some cases, are very good at it. What do you think?
